The chief hazard of porting expertise into publication is misunderstanding the process. We tend to see constraints as obstacles, rather than assets, and our education saddles us with a pressure to be comprehensive, which pushes out of frame the fact that virtually no work that’s ever moved us ever aspired to —much less met— that standard. Writing is much like still photography; it is always an arrangement of elements and tactics within a given, finite frame. In other words, a series of decisions. There isn’t any singular way of approaching that, but outside perspective can be huge in illuminating the quality of our own ideas and guiding them to optimal execution.

line editing / proofing

Every piece of writing you’ve every enjoyed bears multiple sets of fingerprints. While a more subtle element, form is often as much a driver of your experience as the content of what you read. The rhythm, flow, and clarity of how a project is delivered can make or break it, and that’s exactly why any mature writer holds their editors in high esteem.
